It is hard to deny that people have quirks that are hard to break.

Bad habits are normal parts of daily life.

However, even if such idiosyncrasies are very common, they are still annoying or even damaging.

Fortunately, it is very possible to eliminate bad habits with good will power.

One just needs to know the rights steps.

Here are some common bad habits and sure-fire ways of eliminating them.

1. Smoking – Perhaps this is the most damaging of all bad habits. There are many ways to quit smoking. Commercially there are smoke-quitting aids such as nicotine patches and gums, and extra fine filters. One may also join smoking support groups for help in eliminating this habit. For more desperate people, hypnosis is available.

2. Swearing – Impulsive cursing could be quite embarrassing and sounds very impolite. To eliminate curses, one can try to replace bad expressions with similar sounding but neutral words. One can also inflict small punishments, such as paying a dollar, every time a bad word is uttered. Conversely, one can also give self-rewards for curse-free days.

3. Spitting – This is a very rude habit, but there are people who find it difficult to quit. To eliminate the spitting habit, always bring tissue papers or napkins where you can spit it out, and throw it away when you see a trash can. One may also do a similar form of reward and punishment scheme as the one used in the swearing habit above.

4. Talking with the mouth full – This is one of the age old rules that mothers impose on their children. It is both impolite and annoying. To avoid it, one may ask a friend or a partner to constantly give reminders whenever it is done.

5. Nail biting – Some say this is a sign of insecurity or nervousness; but whatever the reason, this habit definitely damages the nails, and even the teeth. To stop nail biting, one can make use of those anti-nail biting polishes that have foul tastes to prevent one from nibbling. One can also wear gloves, although that can be too warm for summer.

6. Gossiping – Tattletales are definitely annoying and the habit of gossiping is yet another popular, but damaging hobby. To stop gossiping, one can do activities that keep one’s mind off rumors. One may take up hobbies and do useful work instead, though those may also be venues for further gossip.

7. Constant complaining – Whining is a great sign of immaturity which can irritate people very much. To prevent complaints, one should always look at the bright side, the other end of the rainbow – what is good in every situation. One should also be conscious, constantly thinking of what to say before saying it.

8. Procrastination – This is one of the most debilitating habits that prevent people from being successful To stop procrastinating, one should keep schedulers and organizers. One can also give self-rewards for every task done on schedule.

9. Showing off – Bragging about one’s abilities and possession is yet another very annoying habit that people do. Unfortunately, a lot of show-offs do not realize that they are quite boastful. The first step to eliminating this habit is to realize and to accept that one is arrogant. After which one may understand that there is no need to impress people all the time.

Bad habits can be hard to break, but it is possible to eliminate them. With the right sense of awareness and urgency to change, one can eliminate bad habits permanently.

Bad Habit Elimination – Saving Yourself and Others

Burying your troubles in a bottle or a stick of cigarette will do more than damage your health. It may make you a health hazard for your loved ones and other people who cross your path. These things pertain to your bad habits that you have to get rid off.

Health and social experts say that bad habits are not either/or phenomena. People vary tremendously in terms of how much they drink or smoke, when they drink or smoke, and how smoking and drinking affects their lives.

Some people smoke or drink a relatively small amount of cigarettes or alcohol, yet it is enough to cause significant problems in their lives. Others do the same thing but more than the average and do not find important aspects of their lives to be impaired.

But remember that under any circumstances, heavy drinking can take a serious toll on your physical health.

Bad Habits – Where Do They Come From?

Bad habits can wreak havoc on your social and metaphysical life, your health, and your total well-being. It can also impair sexual function and human relationships. Bad habits that involve substances such as alcohol and nicotine can cut your life expectancy by 10 to 15 years.

Bad habits grow out of a chosen pattern of living. Nobody sets out to become an addict, a heavy smoker, or a problem drinker, and no one really knows exactly what these causes these bad habits.

However, some lifestyle choices are more likely than others to lead people in that direction. That does not mean, though, that it is easy for individuals to prevent themselves from getting into bad habits. Still, making different choices can help.

The old adage, “bad habits are hard to break” should never be tolerated. Bad habits can be eliminated. It just needs a lot of determination, discipline, and persistence.

How to Prevent Bad Habits

To prevent abuse of alcohol, addiction to smoking, or any other form of vices, the first and most important thing a person must do is know the difference between reasonable and unreasonable use.

Usually, the process of crossing the line from reasonable to unreasonable use of substances or behavior happens without the person being aware of it. If you understand when your bad habits are out of control, you may be able to prevent developing bad habits or addiction.

Here are some proven ways to eliminate bad habits:

1. Be honest with yourself

Health professionals say that only the rarest of people is able to say honestly, “I have a problem,” and not be willing to do something about it. If you are willing to admit to yourself that you may be crossing the line into unreasonable habits, you are much less likely to do so.

2. Believe what others are telling you about your bad habits

If somebody close to you complains or expresses concern about your bad habits such as drinking too much, smoking a lot, or even shopping tremendously, their concern is probably valid. It is very likely that you are overdoing your habits and that it has already started to cause problems on yourself or on other people.

3. Go to the pros

There is no law forcing you to quit smoking or stop drinking on your own, especially these days when there are so many programs and aids available to help people kick the habit.

Advice from a health-care practitioner doubles the quit rate compared to no advice at all. And the more intense the treatment, the higher the quit rate.

More importantly, it is best to discover spirituality in your life. Experts say that one of the most important things that a person can do to prevent or eliminate unreasonable bad habits is to have a strong spiritual life.

It is important to have faith in something bigger than yourself. You need to find meaning in your life that is bigger than the bottle or a cigarette stick.
